Zagonyi Park

A 10-acre park est. in 1969, with a playground, walking path, picnic shelter, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball and a historic marker detailing Zayoni's Charge. Updated in 2019 through a Neighborhood Works grant awarded to the Westside Neighborhood Betterment Assn. Named for a Civil War action that took place nearby on Oct. 25, 1861, following the Battle of Wilson's Creek. Union Major Charles Zagonyi, with 326 men, lead a cavalry charge near Mount Vernon Road into 1,000 Confederate troops camped near Jordan Creek. The attack routed the Confederates, allowing Union men to enter Springfield and pull the Rebel flag from courthouse. The event made national news and is now known as the First Battle of Springfield, or simply Zagonyi's Charge.
